The house I grew up in is a short walk away from a train and over the years I have stopped hearing its horn. The train comes at the same times every day and it comes frequently. When people visit the house they will often comment on the train’s sound and as a teenager I found it to be funny that I did not hear it unless it was pointed out to me. Today I went for a walk in my neighbourhood and realized that I could hear the train because I was practising close listening. I also recorded a passing car, my shoes walking across gravel, birds, and the opening and closing of my mailbox which I almost always check when I go for a walk.
