Island Game! Week 6

Here is the first iteration of my game! I found out how to use terrain "stamps" that I downloaded for free from the asset store. This was new to me and I like the idea of having my terrain look like an island rather than a standard rectangle. Downloading the terrain stamps may have led to my computer crashing. My computer does not react well when I download anything from the asset store and this week was hard because my computer crashed during class right after I downloaded these terrain stamps.

One of my original problems was that everything fell out of the frame when I pressed play in Unity. I needed to go into my AR camera Inspector and make my Image Target the World Center. I had missed this part of class when Unity crashed and my computer restarted.

The Frame Was Fixed! Remaining Problems Were:

  1. My terrain was too small

  2. I wanted my buttons to say "left" + "right"

Fixing the terrain size was not as hard as I anticipated! I originally tried to alter the size as I would normally change the size of a cube or sphere in Unity. This did not work but I was able to edit the size in Terrain > Inspector > Settings > Mesh Resolution (On Terrain Data).

I was much happier with this size for the terrain!

Next Step Was Changing the Buttons!

It took me a while to figure out how to name the buttons! I ended up googling it and went down an accidental rabbit hole of solutions that were not applicable to my game. In the end I figured out how to do it without help from unity forums and was embarrassed by how easy it was.

I was able to name the buttons by clicking the down arrow next to "Button" in the Hierarchy menu on the lefthand side of my screen. Once I clicked the down arrow the word "Text" appeared and on the right hand side of my screen in the Inspector. In I was able to edit the text/font/size/color. I was also very excited about adding a sky material from the asset store to my canvas.

I answered someone's question in a Unity forum! This felt similar to being asked directions during my first year of living in NYC. I don't 100% know what I'm talking about but I'm excited to try!

This is what the game ended up looking like in its final stage.

TINKERCAD

I joined our class in tinkercad.com and am excited to learn more about how to integrate these objects into our unity games.

I finished the seven lessons and played around with the cubes a little bit. I realised that tinkercad let me move on to the next lesson even if I didn't fully finish the first. I tried to go back and fix the ones I didn't do correctly. I liked these lessons! I wish there was something similar for unity. This would have been really helpful for figuring out the basics in the first few classes.

I also bought a Google Pixel 2 for the next part of our project. It should come this week!
